ARSEN DEDIĆ - "HOMO VOLANS" (1973)

Even though it generated a classic of ex-YU pop music, such as "Tvoje nježne godine", this double album marked the end of Arsen Dedić's golden era, selling less than his previous works.

In spite of this, today it can be considered his definitive artistic triumph, with a brilliant alternation of baroque pop, chanson, local folk, and adventurous jazz arrangements.
In fact, some songs are way ahead of their time, like "Ana je Ana", an early mix of pop and world music, with is beautiful fuzzy guitars and Middle East-influenced orchestral lines, or "Mirni podstanar", which tells the story of a murder over a creepy, dissonant instrumental background, five years before the start of Scott Walker's experimental phase.

Don't let the length of the tracklist put you off; these 22 songs deserve your utmost attention.

  1. Olá, amigo

    Ciao, amico.

Thanks for your blog. It's been a great source of discoveries about lesser known artists. And some great albums indeed I already listened from here.

At the present, I'm (coincidence or not) Reading a new book called "Rock Oltro Cortina", and it's a first approach, but my real interest is the singers / songwriters music. I listened to Karel Kryl (which I found very close to the first recordings of José Afonso(from Portugal, my country - by the way, please write in Italian, I understand you. If you want or want to try, I can write in Portuguese), Jacek Kaczmarski (whose violence I compare to some songs of Pi de la Serra - a Catalan singer, one of my favourite) and Ewa Demarczyk, who is something completly out of western cannons. Cannons which Portugal and Spain and Italy also had, but got overlooked and smashed by pop-rock culture.

I want to know if you can help me about the greatest singers /songwriters of these countries you mention. For this Arsen Dedic is wonderful. I'm downloading his first, and can't wait to listen to it carefully.

    Thanks a lot.

    1. Ciao.

ZBIGNIEW WODECKI, Polonia. Cantautore con arrangiamenti barocchi e influenze bossa.
      http://sovietsam.blogspot.it/2015/11/zbigniew-wodecki-zbigniew-wodecki-album.html

YANKA DYAGILEVA, Siberia (Russia).
      http://sovietsam.blogspot.it/2013/11/yanka-dyagileva-prodano-1989.html

TOMAŽ PENGOV, Slovenia. Cantautore di culto, album acustico.
      http://sovietsam.blogspot.it/2014/12/tomaz-pengov-odpotovanja-1973.html

      http://sovietsam.blogspot.it/2014/01/tadeusz-wozniak-tadeusz-wozniak-aka.html

MAREK GRECHUTA, Polonia.
      http://sovietsam.blogspot.it/2015/04/marek-grechuta-droga-za-widnokres-1972.html

Arrangiamenti elettrici e barocchi.
      http://sovietsam.blogspot.it/2013/11/czesaw-niemen-enigmatic-1970.html

A presto :)

  2. Ciao, amico!

    I'm Altair82 in RYM. Where I found you. :)
I didn't want neither to stablish na opposition between singers/songwriters and pop/rock. And I know what you say when you mention those two Italian artists. I have two albums from them, and I intend to know more. Fabrizio is perhaps the more proper kind of singer /songwriters I want to know from each country.

Over here, José Afonso is the one who, in his entire career, did not need to look the pop/rock aestetics to make his songs. Besides, he only got drums (real drums, but subtle ones) on one song (and this, later in his life), but he was opened to everything (like electric bass, samples imitating african sounds... - even though, these, by suggestions of the álbum producers, namely and respectively, José Mário Branco (in 1971) and Júlio Pereira (in 1983 and 1985)) that didn't smugle the spirit of... well, I don't know: it's perhaps a romanticism thing, those spirits to recover the traditional music.

I must precise, so, my intended definition: political singers of 60s and 70's, and Kaczmarski has that sound, indeed, It seems that Visotsky has it also (but I don't understand, ahah). Okudjava not that much. Bischevskaya I learn to love it, for althouhg sounding very northamerican country (which is strange) her voice and some songs catch some... "spirit" of her country / region.

I knwon (have) "Enigmatic", by Niemen and one of Grechuta, and their orchestrated sounds, with choirs... i love them also. :)

Here, in Arsen the electric bass reminds me those more simple arrangements of solitary singers.

I have a lot of reviews in Portuguese artists and I would love to Exchange ideias with you. And music, of course. :)

Meanwhile, I'll be exploring some more great music and names you mention.

Obrigado por escreveres em Italiano. :)
    Até breve, amigo! :)

      Preferisco i cantautori pop-rock:
Battisti (ha fatto di tutto: baroque pop, prog, funk, new wave, alternative dance),
Battiato (anche lui molto eclettico: prog, avant-pop, new wave, alternative rock),
      Alberto Fortis (progressive pop?),
Angelo Branduardi (folk medievale in versione pop-rock).

Rosa Balistreri (folk siciliano, voce e chitarra),
