It was directed by Jaromil Jireš and premiered in September, 1970.

The soundtrack was recorded by Luboš Fišer (1935-1999), which was active as both an academic musician and a film composer. It's an eclectic and unusual soundtrack, in which Fišer mixed Czech folk music, chamber music, church music, avant-garde, and psychedelia.

Even though it was one of the most important elements of the movie, it was released as a Cd only in 2006, by British indie label Finders Keepers.

DOWNLOAD (kbps: 320)

Soviet Samhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15461078255340835933noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1200425281779950688.post-92196632265354065932023-04-13T03:35:00.008-07:002024-01-19T16:28:35.114-08:00SBB - The three other members were Mihály Móricz (guitars), Oszkár Németh (drums, percussion), and László Tolcsvay (keyboards, guitars, vocals).

They released seven studio albums (eight if we count the soundtrack of "István, a király", about which I will write in the near future), with "Útközben" and "Jelenkor" being by far my favourites.

It's hard to decide which one is better, since they are both terrific records. It probably depends on which kind of music you prefer, considering they are radically different from each other.

"Útközben", their fifth album, is a soft rock masterpiece influenced by country music, West Coast harmonies, and funky rhythms. It also makes a heavy use of synthesizers, which is quite unusual for this kind of stuff.

"Jelenkor", their last album, is way darker. You can place somewhere between AOR and neo-prog, with sci-fi atmospheres influenced by both space rock and new wave.

DOWNLOAD "ÚTKÖZBEN" (kbps: 320)

DOWNLOAD "JELENKOR" (kbps: 320)

Soviet Samhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15461078255340835933noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1200425281779950688.post-88565707781687073602022-04-09T06:54:00.001-07:002022-05-24T06:47:27.253-07:002021, SOME GREAT POLISH ALBUMS: BŁOTO, FISZ EMADE TWORZYWO, MUCHY, SOKÓŁ.
2021 has been a fantastic year for Polish music. My favourite phase of their career took place in the second half of the Seventies, when they became a staple of European prog and space rock.

This album in particular is probably their best. It contains two space rock gems such as the title track and "Huszadik századi városlakó", but also shorter hard rock anthems and epic ballads.
It is sealed by a sensational sci-fi artwork, which perfectly represents a band at its creative peak, followed by an international cult (they had many fans in Germany and Poland too).

The line-up has been the same since 1971: János Kóbor (vocals), Tamás Mihály (bass guitar), György Molnár (guitars), Ferenc Debreczeni (drums), László Benkő (keyboards). They never reached the mainstream audience, in spite of a rather approachable sound, but they have been able to build a small, loyal fanbase.
The tracklist is composed by eleven songs, in which symphonic prog dynamics meets space rock technology, giving birth to evocative melodies with atmospheric guitars and keyboard layers.
The sound is definitely advanced for its time: it doesn't sound like the latest records of the classic prog at all, but rather like the first ones of the neo-prog movement. Compare it to bands such as Pallas, Iq, or Marillion, which all came later, and you will be surprised.

East:
István Király, drums
Péter Móczán, bass guitar
Géza Pálvölgyi, keyboards
János Varga, guitars
Miklós Zareczky, vocals

Producer: Ferenc Dobó

DOWNLOAD (kbps: 320)

Soviet Samhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15461078255340835933noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1200425281779950688.post-32519809730496630872021-09-30T10:51:00.008-07:002021-09-30T10:56:36.348-07:00CELELALTE CUVINTE - "CELELALTE CUVINTE" (1987)
Celelalte Cuvinte (trans. "The Other Words") have been the most important rock band emerged in Romania during the Eighties. He founded Voo Voo in the mid Eighties and he's still leading them.

He's a prolific artist for sure: this is his twenty-fourth album with Voo Voo, not counting his various other projects (Osjan, Małe Wu Wu, Waglewski Fisz Emade) and his solo career.

Released in the fall of 2014, "Dobry wieczór" ("Good evening") is one of the best Polish albums of the new century, an art rock adventure through jazz, folk, and traditional music.

One song in particular, "Gdybym", was voted the best song of 2014 by the listeners of Radio Trójka. It easily became Voo Voo's signature song, and deservedly so: the first part is an atmospheric jazz ballad sung by Waglewski, the second one is an Azerbaijani traditional prayer wonderfully performed by guest singers Alim and Fargana Qasimov in their typical mugham style.

The album would be worth its price for this song alone, but the rest is brilliant too.

DOWNLOAD (kbps: 256)

Soviet Samhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15461078255340835933noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1200425281779950688.post-10959391934426203272020-08-06T11:11:00.005-07:002020-08-06T16:17:17.609-07:00NIKOLA VRANJKOVIĆ - "VERONAUTIKA" (2017)After having spent more than twenty years playing guitar in Block Out, one of the most important art rock bands from Serbia, Nikola Vranjković released this double album as a solo artist.

It took him around fifteen years to ammass all these songs, some of which he had already played live on different occasions.

In the end, "Veronautika" resulted in an anthology of fifteen epic songs, with many of them surpassing the 7-minute mark.

It's easy to get lost in this multi-layered sound, created by mixing gothic atmospheres, echoed guitars, wall-of-sound arrangements, and slow, martial rhythms.

Thanks to some majestic arrangements and Vranjković's suggestive baritone voice, "Veronautika" is as immersive as music can get.

File under: alternative rock, gothic rock, art rock, post-rock.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This is the second album by Breakout, and probably their most celebrated one. It's one of those rare perfect albums in which you wouldn't change one note: blues rock at its very best, with some hints of jazz here and there.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">At first, they played mainly instrumental jazz-rock, as did most Czech rock bands of that era, but as the Eighties began they became aware of British post-punk, and incorporated it in their style.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The result was a strange kind of progressive post-punk, full of virtuoso guitar and synthesizer solos. In fact, <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Pražský Výběr were way ahead of British post-punk in terms of technical ability, and that made their music something exciting and peculiar.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This is their second album. It was recorded in 1982, but released only in 1988, as the authorities did not like their frantic and flippant style. Nonetheless, young Czech people adored them, and their concerts in underground clubs regularly sold out.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">"Pražákům je hej" is still a rock anthem as of today, but the whole album is awesome. You will rarely hear anything like this.
Entirely instrumental, "Huascaran" is their third studio work and it stands out for its dedication to the victims of the devastating earthquake that struck Peru in 1970. In a nation such as Slovakia, where rock music had been put in chains, naming an album to the brothers of a distant country could be considered a political act.

This line-up of Fermáta was composed by four fantastic musicians, able to merge the angular jazz-rock of Mahavishnu Orchestra and the jazz fusion smoothness of the Weather Report. Guitarist František Griglák dominates the former side, whilst keyboard player Tomáš Berka stands out on the latter. Having already discussed Locomotiv GT's debut album, some may find it odd that I'm skipping to their eight one. However, as we are talking about my favourite album by this band and one of my favourite Hungarian albums in general, I just couldn't wait.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">By the time this album was recorded, Locomotiv GT had a completely different line-up, with Gábor Presser being the only constant musician. The other three members joined the band between 1973 and 1977.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">"Loksi" became their best selling album up to that moment, especially thanks to the weird disco-funk hit "Embertelen dal". In its 17 songs you can find lots of different influences, ranging from yacht rock ("A dal a miénk") to prog ("Prológ és trialóg"), from piano ballads ("Ha eljönnek az angyalok") to boogie rock ("Szentimentális rakenroll"), from soul ("Gondolj rám") to electronic music ("Áldd meg a dalt").
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The production is excellent, with many keyboard instruments and experimental sounds, but this does not come at the expense of its songwriting. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I would describe the overall sound as "art rock", since every song is extremely refined and smartly arranged.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This is their debut album, their only one that I would classify as progressive rock, just before switching into a more conventional hard rock sound.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The band had a strong appeal on male rock music listeners, thanks to their powerful and elaborate arrangements, but also among the female audience, with frontman and singer Sándor Révész being considered a sex symbol.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Their lyrics had to satisfy the authority, avoiding subversive slogans and political suggestions, but this didn't prevent them from producing great music, incorporating in their songs funk, jazz fusion, and classical elements, but also local influences from the likes of space-prog legends Omega.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Every member helped during the songwriting process, with k<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">eyboard player Péter Gallai being the main composer. He also provided lead vocals in songs such as <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">"<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Ki tudja, hol van<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">", with its adorable cabaret atmosphere.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The album sold more than 100.000 copies at the time, and the ballad "Ha volna két életem<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">" is still one of the most popular Hungarian songs ever.
It wasn't a proper album, but more of an anthology of unreleased songs recorded from 1969 to 1972.
<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif">

<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif">This garagey proto-progressive style was already surpassed by the time of its release, but the songs were still powerful, dynamic, and perfectly crafted.
<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif">In fact, some of them are so amazing that I prefer this record to the symphonic prog classic "Modra rijeka" (1978), which is usually considered Indexi's masterpiece.
<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif">

<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif">The delay between some of the recording sessions and the cassette release must be taken in account too. The epic suite "Negdje na kraju, u zatišju" may have sounded dated in 1972, but it surely wasn't in 1969, when progressive rock was at the beginning.
<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif">

<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif">Sadly, the cassette didn't sell well, and these songs remained an underground affair, despite Indexi being the most popular band from Bosnia at the time.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It must not be easy to live in Putin's Russia and release a song like "520", with its statements against the Crimean invasion.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Compared to his previous work, I think the math rock influence is stronger than ever, whilst the shoegaze component has waned. This is probably due to a new line-up of backing musicians, composed of drummer Vasily Yakovlev and guitar player Igor Babko.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In the end, another brilliant album from a legend of Russian alternative music.
Efekt, depending on the album, the band lead by guitar player Radim Hladík was one of the most important music acts to ever emerge in Czechoslovakia.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">After starting as a song-oriented project, they embraced instrumental jazz-rock when most of rock music was banned for its subversive lyrics.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This is their fifth album, the fourth in the jazz-rock style, and probably their best. Whilst their previous efforts were too unbalanced towards free jazz ("Coniunctio", 1970) or sounded like some poor man's Chicago ("Nová syntéza", 1971), this one is mature, original, and intense.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It was recorded in 1973 and released at the end of 1974, in a limited edition for the export market. That version was credited to "The Blue Effect" and titled "A Benefit of Radim Hladík". <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It was then reissued for the local market one year later, credited to "Modrý Efekt & Radim Hladík<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">", which also became the title of every following edition.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Every song is composed and arranged by Hladík, who shows his musicianship with crazy, intricate jazz fusion solos. Bass player Josef Kůstka and drummer Vlado Čech jam at full speed, with funk gusto and syncopated times, while Lešek Semelka's organ and piano provide a symphonic prog touch.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Jazz legend Jiří Stivín appears as a guest, playing wind instruments.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It's not easy to compare this album to anything else. You can try to imagine a symphonic prog version of Mahavishnu Orchestra, but it would be a mere approximation.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It is also worth noticing that the slow section of "Boty" totally sound like Camel's "Song Within a Song", which would have been recorded only three years later.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This is quite simply one of the best instrumental progressive rock albums ever.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
